  Day 27

After placing the joists, the mid-point at the middle beam had to be squared to make the joists straight. For the rim joists, Jonnie used a string nailed to each end of the joist to straighten them. For the remaining joists, he measured each end of the joist against the known square rim joists, and matching the mid-point. At this point he clamped down the joist at the midpoint and toe nailed it into the midpoint beam.

At the house end, the joists were left un-attached to the joist hanger. As he went along he shimmed the house side joist ends for level at every joist as I went along.

Fun Facts
Each joist has 38 fasteners. 10 for the joist hanger, 13 at the midpoint beam ( 10 for the hurricane tie, 3 toe nails into the beam ), 13 at the end beam, and 2 at the header. The rim joists and the joists immediacy inside the rims have 6 toe nails at each beam for added stability. So, 18 joists x 38 fasteners + 24 additional for the rim joists = 708 fasteners! Plus...29 individually measured and cut pieces of blocking for the titans, each with 6 fasteners, so that’s 174 more fasteners.

If you add in the 18 fasteners per post ( 144 total ) that brings us up to 1026 hand driven fasteners so far.

The decking will require 1056 fasteners. Thank goodness for the nail gun.
