  The clamps came in handy to keep the beams together while we nailed them to the posts with adjustable post caps. We nailed into the beam, but we screwed into the post. If ever a post does rot, then we want to be able to replace it. If the posts are screwed everywhere (to the beams and to the post saddles sitting on the concrete piers) then it's just a matter of unscrewing, removing the post, and replacing it (after bracing the deck, obviously).
