Attaching the joists to the ledger board on the house is easy using the joist hangers, except for one design feature: double joists, spaced apart for water flow where the decking boards meet end to end. Most people double-up the joists, but we wanted space for the water to flow through. Just 1/4" would have been good, but for one thing: they make joist hangers for double joists but not for double joists with space between them. Since the joist hangers take up about 1" on either side of the joist, we needed 2" in between them. And now... how do you hammer the nails when there is only 2" of space? I don't know how he did it, but Jonnie managed it.
