Editing Existing CFG Files
Before you edit a configuration file, be clear about what you are changing. Make a note of the data file, the directory it is written to, the name of the template and the pages it generates.
- Open Audience.data by using the desktop shortcut or by clicking on the Windows Start button and selecting Programs > Digimation > Audience.data.
- The Welcome to Audience.data screen will open.
- Click on the Edit button.
Audience.data creates a CFG (configuration) file whenever you connect incoming data to a display page. The CFG file was named by the creator and contains information about which template generates what page(s), headers, start/end date, etc.
Note: If you are not sure of the name of the CFG file you want to edit, check the Configuration Comment column. Remember, it is a good idea to fill in this section when you create a new CFG file so this step will be easier.
- Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the list to see the Configuration Comment and Template name and path. This will help you to be sure you are editing the correct file.
- Click on the CFG file you want to edit.
- Click Next > (or double-click on the CFG file).
When you are sure you want to delete a configuration, follow these steps:
- From the first screen of the Audience.data Wizard, select the Edit button. The “Edit and Existing Configuration” screen will open.
- Click on the configuration you want to delete so that it is selected.
- Click the Delete button.
- The Delete Configuration dialogue will open.
- Check the information to ensure this is the configuration you want to delete.
- If your data source is not local (i.e., it requires a connection), you will need to indicate if you want the data connection deleted along with the data configuration. If you do want to delete the Data Source Connection, check the box next to “This Data Source Connection will be deleted”.
- Click the Next> button.
- The configuration will be deleted and, if selected, the data connection will be deleted as well.

Template |
Use this to change the Audience template used for generating display pages. Note that the new template must include $tags identical to the ones in the former template. If the $tags are not identical, you must create a new configuration (CFG) file. You can use this feature to move a data display page to a different Audience.foundation zone. You have to move the template to the zone you want the data to be displayed in. Then, use this feature to reconnect the data to the template in its new location. |
Page |
If you change the Template that Audience.data uses to generate display pages for a particular data file, then you will see confirmation of that change displayed here. |
Magazine |
If the Audience.foundation zone has more than one magazine, a drop-down will be available and you must choose which magazine your pages will be displayed from. |
Template |
Use the up/down arrows to scroll through the templates you have configured. Use the Add button to add additional Templates (it must be an existing template created using Audience.foundation). All templates must be a duplicate of the template in the configuration file and must contain the same "$ variables". Template components like resolution and background colour may be different |
Append Page to List |
If you want all pages created in this magazine by Audience.data to be automatically added to the end of the playlist, check the Append Pages to List box. You can re-order these pages in Audience.foundation later. |
When you are finished making changes click the Next> button to continue editing.
Note: If you want to go back and edit another CFG file, click Save and then <Back. This will return you to the Edit an Existing Configuration screen so you can select the next file for editing.
If you are subscribing to CNL (Capital Networks Limited) for data feeds then you will use this screen to confirm new template configuration in Audience.foundation. You can change the Page name and the magazine name using this screen.
If you change the Page name be sure to keep the “+” sign so that a new Page can be created for each new bit of data.

Enable/Disable Configuration |
Use this feature if you need to disable a configuration but plan to use it again or are re-activating a disabled configuration. |
Comment |
This is not used for processing data; you can put anything here if it’s helpful to you |
Data Path |
The path to the directory that will contain the incoming data files in xml, csv or txt format. Some configuration files will automatically use the default path: C:\Program Files\MediaGate\Collect. For example, data from Capital Networks. |
Click Next> to continue.
This screen is available if you are editing a Data Configuration that requires a Data Source Connection. In other words, a data source that is remote to the Audience.foundation computer. Check the box to disable the connection displayed in the Title and Type field. The Data Configuration itself will not be changed.
The Data Source Connection will be disabled but NOT be deleted. You can enable the connection again if required.
Note that the Title and Type fields cannot be edited.
Audience.data can process your data in three different ways. This flexibility makes it easier to work with incoming data. Below each option is explained in detail. You can change how your data is being processed by picking one of the following options:
If you want to process your data this way select the By Filename radio button. Regardless of what files end up in your data directory, only files with this name will be processed. It is important to note that by leaving out the extension Audience.data is prepared to process all types of files with this file name. If you data comes in more than one format you will find this useful. However, if there are other file types with the same root name in your data folder you may want to change the name of the data file you want processed. Or, you can use a different selection method.
When you are finished selecting the method Click Next>.
This is the most specific way of processing data. In order to select the radio button Files containing this string you must first copy-and-paste the correct string to the field. If you are not sure, follow the steps below:
1.Have the Data Selection Method screen of Audience.data open.
2.Open your sample data in a text editor application like Notepad. Cut and paste the data string you want to use into the field provided.
3.Once your text string is copied to the field you will be able select the radio button next to Files containing this string.
Click Next>.
If you want Audience.data to process all the data files in the data folder select the second radio button All files in directory path.
When you are finished selecting the method Click Next>.

|
Start Date Offset |
To allow data to begin displaying in the future by any number of days. Note: if you are dealing with time zones and require a page to be made "yesterday" select -1. (offset from the moment the pages are made) |
Always (never expires) |
Use this if you want pages to be valid forever. They will never expire. |
Days |
Use Days radio button if your page will be on the air for more than one day. By default, pages have a life of one day but you might want to display Hog prices for a whole week so you would set this option for 6 days. You need to know about “Two Midnights”. Pages always have two midnights. In other words, if data comes in at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday and the page is created with Number of Days set to 1, the page will expire at midnight on Thursday night, NOT Wed night. |
Hours |
Use Hours radio button if your page will be displayed less than one day. Enter the number of hours you want your page to display. |
Minutes |
If your pages will be displayed for less than sixty (60) minutes use the radio button Minutes to control the display time. Be sure to enter the number of minutes. This setting is ideal for time-sensitive data. |
Number of Pages |
The number of pages is automatically calculated based on the number of lines in the data file and the number of $ tags in each Audience template page. You may not want pages generated from each line of data so you can reduce the number of pages by changing the number on this screen. Note: If your sample data file has less data lines than the number displayed, please be sure to set the maximum number of pages to reflect the lines of data contained in the actual incoming data files. For example, if your sample data file for an election broadcast has only 3 candidates but data for 7 candidates will be provided by the election system, set the Maximum Page Number to "7". (Note, if your layout has two candidates per display page, the maximum page number would be "4") |
When you are finished, click Next>.Data Acquisition Gate Settings
Audience.data is a wizard that gives you the power to create and edit CFG files used by Audience’s built-in Data Acquisition Gate. Depending on your broadcast needs, you will sometimes need to adjust the settings of the gate itself. We have made this easy for you by exposing the gate settings in the wizard. Remember: when you change these settings, you must restart Audience.data (by restarting Audience.foundation) in order for them to take effect.
list of settings you can access:
- move Date/Clock page to different magazine
- change how often the gate checks for data updates
- set up an external weather probe
- set up a serial port for data acquisition
Note that the following is only applicable if you are carrying forward a Date Time page configured for Audience versions 1 or 2. If you are making a new Date Time page with later versions of Audience, please see Create a Date and/or Clock Page.
If you have made a new DateTime page or moved the DateTime page to a different magazine, use this feature to (re) select it. Once selected, the old DateTime page will be replaced by the new one on air.
Depending on the type of data you are displaying, you may want to check for updates more, or less, frequently. Remember that increased frequency means increased processing and may slow down your system.
- From the Welcome screen of Audience.data click on the Settings button.
- Keep clicking the Next> button until you get to the Update Settings screen.
- Change the Update Period to reflect frequency of data update.
- Change the Update Type to reflect the type of unit (minutes or seconds) you want to use.
The Data Acquisition Gate queries your Weather Probe and provides an XML file containing weather data every minute.
If your weather data stops displaying for an unknown reason try disconnecting and reconnecting the power to the weather probe console.
Setting and Options Definition Table |
|
Probe Type |
From the drop-down select the type of probe you are using. |
Comm Port |
Type in the number of the port you are using for the Weather Probe connection. (for example: COM1) |
Speed |
Check your Weatherlink to determine what the speed switch is set to and then select that speed from the drop-down. |
Temp Units |
Do you want temperature units displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit? |
Speed Units |
Do you want the wind speed displayed in kilometers per hour or miles per hour? |
Precision |
Do you want to display temperature to one decimal place or none? |
Calibrate |
If you believe your probe is consistently wrong, for example, displaying temperatures 2 degrees higher than the actual temperature, then set this to –2. |
Export XML |
Select YES if you want to export weather data to create new pages. See below for more information. |
Barom Units |
Do you want barometric pressure to be displayed as kilopascals or inches or milibars? |
Displaying Weather Data
You can change your DateTime page into a DateTimeWeather page or have a page only for Weather display. Use the following replaceable tags in your Audience template to display weather information:
Use This Replaceable Tag |
To Display this Information |
$Temp |
temperature |
$WindSpd |
wind speed |
$WindDir |
wind direction |
$Bar |
barometer (only supported in WeatherMonitor, not WeatherWizard |
Example
Your DateTime page template replaceable tags might look like this:
$Smonth $9mday (to display the date)
$Temp°C Wind:$WindSpd K/H $WindDir (to display the current temperature in Celsius, the wind speed and direction)
$Bar kPa (to display the Barometric Pressure in Kpa)
If you want to make a separate weather page use the Audience.data Wizard to create a new CFG file and match values from the XML weather data file with a template that you make.
- From Audience.foundation select an appropriate zone.
- Make a template page.
- Open it in Corel and make some text holders: "Temp: 55°C" ; "Wind: 123 K/H NNE"; “Barom: 101.3 kPa".
- After saving, look at the text in Audience.foundation Change the numbers to replaceable tags: "Temp: $Temp°C" ; "Wind: $WindSpd K/H $WindDir" (keep a space after $WindSpd or it might not be found.) ; "Barom: $Barom kPa".
- Launch Audience.data and select the weather template you made.
- Choose the latest WeatherWizard.xml or WeatherMonitor.xml (depending on which probe you have) data file.
- Note: data is deleted every other day. On odd days (Like March 15th) it will be C:\Program Files\MediaGate\Deposit\ODD\WeatherWizard.xml. On even days (Like March 16th) it will be in C:\ProgramFiles\MediaGate\Deposit\EVEN\WeatherWizard.xml7)
- In Audience.data match data and tags: The temperature (4th item - like 22) with $Temp. The WindSpd (8th item after KPH units = 0) with $WindSpd. The WindDir (9th item = -99 unless you have it working) with WindDir.
- All defaults are fine.
- Once you finish, Audience.data Wizard should start making a new page called Weather in the same zone you made the template.
- The value for wind speed will show –99 unless you either hook it up outside on a windy day, or get a non-smoker to blow on it.
